Kara Sheehan, MA, ATR

Resident Therapist

Kara is a compassionate and dedicated professional, holding the title of Registered Art Therapist (ATR) and serving as a Resident in Counseling in Virginia. She achieved her Master's degree in Art Therapy at the esteemed George Washington University. Kara's expertise lies in working with adolescents, young adults, LGBTQ+ populations, as well as individuals dealing with trauma, depression, anxiety, and various mood disorders. She firmly believes in tailoring her approach to each client's unique needs.

In her practice, Kara seamlessly blends traditional therapeutic techniques with the power of artistic expression. By providing a safe and nurturing environment, she encourages clients to delve into their inner thoughts, emotions, and life experiences through various artistic mediums such as drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, or writing. These creative outlets serve as powerful means of communication, enabling individuals to effectively express feelings and experiences that may otherwise be challenging to articulate. Kara warmly welcomes those who prefer traditional talk therapy and wholeheartedly supports their healing journey.

Complementing her expertise in art therapy, Kara incorporates evidence-based modalities such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) techniques in her sessions. This holistic approach ensures comprehensive and personalized care for her clients.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Kara understands the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. While her passion lies in helping others as a therapist, she also nurtures her own well-being. Kara finds joy in painting, cherishing the company of friends and family (including her beloved feline companions), and embarking on meaningful journeys with loved ones.
